Garden 4
126 Salisbury Road

OPEN SATURDAY ONLY 10 – 4

Only 10 minutes out of town and 2 minutes up the road from Garden 3, Gary and Andrew’s garden interrogates its rural setting with the questions “How formal is formal?” and “What makes a gardener?” The latter stems from Gary’s claim that he is not a gardener, yet the place defies his characterisation, providing a wonderful example of colour and artistic form.

This is a rural property approached via a long driveway – a small road really – that passes a gate, grazing cattle and even a small neighbour house on the right, all of which is accompanied by lovely views. Upon entering the actual garden, one of the first things you will see is a 100 year old font standing like a sentinel in a small path to the left.  One of the garden’s more formal features is a series of small hedges. Paving and stonework add texture, and a variety of pots, much-loved and brought here from previous gardens, allow for versatility in the artistic arrangement of colour and form. Balsams spill from several large pots to greet the visitor at the entrance.

The garden has evolved over eight years. When they took up residence, the owners found the whole place “unloved”, needing a lot of “fixing”; they started inside and worked toward the outside, and the result is beautiful. They both agree that it is high maintenance – again joking about their “non-gardener” status – but worth it, and the visitor finds the place simply an enchanting mix of formal and whimsical.

Almost wherever you turn, there are beautiful views to be had from this garden, and there are places to sit to enjoy them. It is essentially an entertainer’s garden, with several areas specially designed for the purpose: from the indoor-outdoor setting near the front, to the wide-open area complete with firepit and stone seats, with its sweeping vista past the roses over the paddocks to the hills beyond……

SOME COLOURFUL MARKERS WILL BE PLACED AT THE ENTRANCE

Please drive in. It’s a long driveway, a gravel road really; just keep going till you see more colourful markers and our volunteer waiting to greet you – and park at the sheds according to the signs.

Entry $5
